What Can You Buy With UCard?

You are currently viewing What Can You Buy With UCard?

If you have a UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plan, you probably have a UCard in your wallet right now. The main question is if you are using it to its full potential.

The UCard seems like a regular member ID, but it works as a strong debit card filled with credits for important goods and services. It was made to help members avoid the hassle of carrying many cards. This one card can buy many items based on a member’s plan.

For many members, the UCard is still a mystery because they don’t know what benefits they can get with their card. As a result, many millions of dollars in benefits are not used each year.

You try to buy something you think is on your UCard, but the card doesn’t work at checkout. This is really embarrassing and makes it hard for someone to know what they can buy and what they can’t.

We want to help you use this resource better to save money and understand what you can buy with your plan. We have sorted all the eligible items into four categories.

You can buy these items with your UCard. We have grouped them into 4 types to help you understand your buying power better.

UnitedHealthcare Ucard Purchasable Items

Type 1: Health Products You Can Buy Without a Prescription / OTC Health Products

The over-the-counter health products category gives people important household items. People can buy these products whenever they want, and they don’t need a prescription. Also, many of the plans can fit into this group. These items are seen as common and basic care items, so they are usually part of almost every over-the-counter (OTC) benefit package.

You can spend your allowance to buy these:

  • Pain relief: The common medicines such as Tylenol and ibuprofen, and also from creams for arthritis like Voltaren.
  • First Aid: These are the basics for small injuries, like Band-Aids, antibiotic creams, and rubbing alcohol.
  • Digestive Health: These are the medicines that help with stomach problems, like antacids (Tums), laxatives, and anti-diarrheals.
  • Allergy and Cold: These are the things you need for the season like cough syrup, allergy pills, and throat drops.
  • Diagnostics: This includes tools to check your health at home, like blood pressure monitors and thermometers.
  • Daily Care: These are everyday things you might use daily like toothpaste, denture cream, toothbrushes (manual or electric), and eye drops.

Type 2: Healthy Food (The “Grocery” Benefit)

The special grocery help works a lot like a grocery store budget. It gives you money to buy healthy food for your fridge and pantry. This special grocery budget is just for some plans.

This budget is usually for dual Special Needs Plan (D-SNP) members who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid, and for members with specific chronic medical conditions like diabetes or heart disease, where nutrition is important for their care.

This benefit can be used for many basic items and whole foods. These are:

  • Fruits and vegetables in any form: Fresh, frozen, or canned (no added sugars or salt).
  • Meat, chicken, fish, and eggs. Proteins from plants such as beans and nuts.
  • Milk, cheese, and yogurt.
  • Bread, pasta, cereal, flour, sugar, spices, and bottled water.

What Is Excluded

This benefit aims to give you nutrients, so “junk” food and non-foods are usually left out. So, you can’t buy:

  • Snacks/Drinks/Sweets.
  • Drinks and smoking items.
  • Food for pets.
  • Paper towels and cleaning supplies, etc.

Type 3: Utility Bill Payments That You Can Make with UCard

This benefit lets you use part of your monthly allowance to help pay for common household services, so you can spend less on your monthly bills. This benefit, like the Grocery Benefit, is only for some plan types, like Dual Special Needs Plans (D-SNPs). D-SNP plans are for members who qualify for extra government financial help.

You can use your money for regular utilities to keep your home working, like:

  • Electricity and gas
  • Water
  • Cleaning (Garbage and Wastewater)
  • Web Service

Here’s how it works:

Plan carriers are trying hard to make this process easier for you by offering both online and in-person payment choices.

  • You can usually pay bills online directly through the member portal of the plan, like UCard Hub.
  • You can go to places like Walmart MoneyCenters with your bill and card to make payments, depending on your plan.

Type 4: Services for Transport and Health

Transportation is provided, so you can get medical care or treatment even if you don’t have a way to get there. This benefit mostly offers rides for non-emergency trips to key medical places. Based on your plan, you might be able to use this benefit for:

  • Doctor Visits: Getting rides to and from planned doctor appointments.
  • Pharmacy Runs: Going to get medicine.
  • Health Errands: Ride for other allowed health needs.

The Transportation Benefit is not just a simple swipe-and-go advantage. You can’t use your UCard to pay a cab or ride share driver directly for the transportation benefit. You will probably need to plan your ride ahead of time by either calling UnitedHealthcare or booking it with the transportation provider chosen by UnitedHealthcare.

Will my unused credits carry over to next month?

No, not really. For many people, their benefits will be what is called a “use it or lose it” benefit. Your plan can give you credits every month or every three months. In both cases, any credits you don’t use by the end of the cycle will expire and won’t carry over to the next cycle. It can be good to check your credit amount on the 20th of each month. This way, you can buy things before your account resets.

Can I use my UCard to shop online?

You don’t need to visit a store to use your UCard benefits. Many programs let you buy products online through the UCard Hub, which you can access on both the mobile app and the website of UnitedHealthcare.

Also, many programs let you use your UCard credits for delivery purchases at big stores like Walmart and Amazon. You usually need to start this process on the UHC Member Portal to make sure the items you want to buy are eligible.

Why was my card not accepted at the register?

Usually, there are just two reasons why a credit card gets declined:

  • Your shopping cart might have items that don’t qualify, like paper towels or cleaning products.
  • If the items you can buy are more than what you have in your balance.

What can I do if I lose my UCard or if it gets stolen?

Report it quickly so you can keep your other credits. You can usually cancel a lost card using the UnitedHealthcare mobile app or by calling the number in your plan documents. They will turn off your old card and send you a new one. It usually takes about 7 to 10 business days from when they send a replacement card to when you get it.

Can I send back things I bought with my UCard?

You can return items, but the rules for returns might be different for each store. Usually, when you return items, the money goes back into your UCard for you to use later. Keep the receipt of your order and take it with you when you return it, as some stores may ask for it.
